As mentioned in our other articles, one of the most important things to writing any essay is the structure. Most of the times, students are able to do excellent research and compose the perfect essay, but fall victim to the woes of bad structure. EssayKingdom has done the research on behalf of the students to help them understand how to write a general essay followed by structuring their compare/contrast essay in one of the following formats:
Compare and Contrast Essay Format 1:
- Introduction
Like any other essay, you begin your essay with and introduction —should open generally and make its way into the thesis question statement.
- Issue 1
In the first section of the essay, the student must cover only one issue or subject for the comparison, and contrast. As we have explained earlier the concept of the Compare/Contrast essay, that it takes 2 or more topics, discusses the similarities and differences and. Students should keep in mind, that they should not discuss issue 2 in this first section of the essay.
- Issue 2
In the second section of the essay, students are to discuss only the second topic. Students should not discuss the first or any other issue in this section. This section is dedicated to the second issue which you think is important and you would need to show strong research on the issue by explaining it in detail.
- Issue 1 and 2 Discussed
This is the section that carries the most marks. Once you are done analyzing issue 1 and issue 2 (independently), you need to start working on the discussion and how you would compare the two issues together.
- Conclusion
This is where you present your verdict, the conclusion. Just like your introduction, your conclusion will also be started generally and following through to a solid conclusion that shows or illustrates your final opinion. The conclusion expresses your certainty and absolute knowledge on the topic or thesis statement which was being discussed earlier.
Compare and Contrast Essay Format 2:
The second pattern that is used for a Compare and Contrast essay is as follows:- Introduction
As mentioned in Structure 1, you introduction will be similar to the structure one, you begin your essay with and introduction —should open generally and make its way into the thesis question statement.
- Compare Issue 1 and 2
In this pattern you directly start off this section with all the similarities and discuss both in multiple or single paragraph, depending on the length of the assignment. You should make sure you have done extensive research to be able to draw the similarities between the two issues under consideration. Ideally, you should have a minimum of 3-4 paragraphs on the similarities between the two topics, these paragraphs can be of variable length and should consist of verifiable or strong examples for each similarity
- Contrast Issue 1 and 2
In this section, students need to work carefully to analyse the differences between the two topics. This is a little tricky as this requires the student to be very careful when contrasting the two topics. At times the differences are very minute that the students forget to contrast them. Again, this section should have equal or more paragraphs in relation the comparison.
- Conclusion
The conclusion in this case should be related to the two topics and should have a final verdict explaining the points discussed and should confidently express the student’s final thoughts.
